Nottingham’s Guide To May Bank Holiday Weekend Events

28 May 2010

Description:

That Friday feeling is upon us, so here at Guide2Nottingham we like to offer our users a brief overview of what’s on in Nottingham this May bank holiday weekend. I’m sure everyone is ecstatic that it’s a long weekend and there’s a huge amount going on, so get involved!

Tonight, if you fancy a film, why not check out Bad Lieutenant: Port of call New Orleans(18) at Broadway. Abel Ferrara’s 1992 cult thriller is reimagined and removed to New Orleans where Lieutenant Terence McDonagh roams the Katrina-ravaged Big Easy on a mission to solve the murder of a family of illegal immigrants dealing heroin without cutting in the local drug lord. Terence is no stranger to playing fast and loose with the law, and is almost as good at scoring drugs as he is at his job. As the mystery gets murkier, he descends further into an underworld of drugs, gambling, sex and death.

Alternatively if you fancy some live music, head to Breathe Carolina Plus Fact At Rock City or Detonate At Stealth which features Ed Rush, Fresh, Brookes Brothers, Silkie, Lenzman & more.

On Saturday daytime, it’s worth checking out the Raw Photography Exhibition. RAW is the upcoming Nottingham Trent photography graduate festival. The photographic work on display will showcase cutting edge creative approaches to photography, sophisticated in its representation of diverse subjects such as fashion, architecture, portraiture, complex issues of identity and the city.

Saturday night is Yunioshi at Café Bar Contemporary. A brightly, highly, super cool funk breakbeat three piece from Nottingham, with a sound that is so spot on it would appear this is more american sounding than a british thing! If you imagine Lemonjelly, Massive Attack and Del La Soul forming a supergroup, this would be the outcome.

Sunday is the highly anticipated Dot To Dot Festival 2010 which takes place in a variety of venues across Nottingham including,  Rock City, Rescue Rooms, Stealth, Trent University and the Bodega. Confirmed artists include Mystery Jets, Ellie Goulding, Zane Lowe and many, many more.

Continuing with the music theme, there’s also the chance to dance away to Calvin Harris at Gatecrasher. Favoring a naughty schoolboy look that makes him seem even younger than he is. Scottish artist, producer, and remixer Calvin Harris has a similarly youthful and forward-looking approach to his music. Skipping the usual apprenticeship in the clubs or on indie labels, Harris went from posting his own D.I.Y. electroclash music online through /MySpace and similar sites to signing with the multinational giant EMI almost in a single step.

Bank Holiday Monday daytime offers the Silver Arrow Competition for kids. Calling all budding Robin Hoods and Maid Marians aged 8 years and over. Round off Robin Hood Month by taking part in this special archery challenge underneath the Major Oak. Use your skills for a chance to win the Silver Arrow trophy.

Alternatively if you’re football crazy, go and watch Central Masters Football tournament at Trent FM Arena. Six teams will be lining up for the challenge – Notts County Masters, Derby County Masters, Nottingham Forest Masters, Leicester City Masters, Wolves Masters and West Bromwich Albion Masters. The bitter rivals will all compete for a place in the grand final and of course bragging rights are at stake.
