Best Buy, the US electrical retail giant, will be moving to Castle Marina Retail Park in Nottingham, and Kingsway retail Park in Derby. Smaller electronic retailers could be in trouble due to the immense buying power that Best Buy wields, the company’s commitment to the pre-owned games market and the Best Buy's famous customer care. The move to Nottingham is part of the retailer’s expansion into the UK and other European countries.
Best Buy has ambitious expansion plans with up to 200 stores expected to open across the UK. The stores stock a wide variety of audio and visual equipment, computing technology, entertainment devices, appliances, mobiles, music, movies, games, and mobile broadband services. The Thurrock store features a mobile section with 110 live handsets on display.
With revenues so far in 2010 of almost 50 billion USD, and with operations in the US, Canada, Mexico, China, Turkey and the UK, the company is a force to be reckoned with. The stores in Nottingham and Derby are part of its expansion within the UK, which could see up to 200 Best Buy stores eventually.
Best Buy has also been rumoured to be considering purchasing UK rivals Kesa Electricals (owner of Comet) and DSG International soon to be renamed Dixons Retail (owner of Currys and PC World) .The Company already owns 50% of Carphone warehouse.
The first two Best Buy stores in the UK were Thurrock in Essex and Hedge End in Southampton. The rents and details of the deals in Nottingham and Derby were undisclosed but its stores are between 35,000 sq ft and 50,000 sq ft.
Paul Antoniadis, CEO of Best Buy branded operations, said: ‘I’m delighted that we will be bringing the Best Buy experience to people who live and work in and around both Derby and Nottingham.We’re now recruiting for roles across the store in Derby, with our search for colleagues beginning towards the end of the year for our store in Nottingham.’
The store at the Castle Marina Retail Park in Nottingham is due to be open by summer 2011. Due to the enormity of the store, it will be an amalgamation of three existing units including the former Mothercare and Carpetright units.
