Description:
The new 27 million pound school in Bulwell Nottingham has opened ready for the new term. The school has commented that one of it's main design features, being open plan, should help to prevent bullying.
The Bulwell Academy been made as open plan as possible to make sure pupils can always be seen by teachers, and to promote a community atmosphere.
1,050 11-16 year olds go to The Bulwell Academy and there will be another 250 places for post-16 students.
The academy has been constructed on the site of the former River Leen Comprehensive School at the junction of Squires Avenue and Hucknall Lane.
Up to now, the academy pupils have been split between this site and the former Henry Mellish Comprehensive School on Highbury Road. But from now on, all 1,000, aged from 11 to 16, will be taught at the same venue.
An internal courtyard is the heart of the new development and it leads to five 'learning villages' that have been designed as a safe environment for pupils.
A large glass 'enterprise centre' provides links with local and national businesses and is set to play a key role in the regeneration of Bulwell.
