Nottingham’s Guide To Weekend Events

03 September 2010

Description:

That Friday feeling is upon us, so here at Guide2Nottingham we like to offer our users a brief overview of what’s on in Nottingham this weekend.  From theatre to brass bands in the park, films to scavenger hunts, we’ve got it covered and more!

Tonight’s, big highlight has to be the opening night of She Stoops To Conquer At Nottingham Playhouse. Oliver Goldsmith’s 18th century comedy with larger than life characters, big laughs and even bigger frocks! A wealthy country squire arranges a meeting between his beautiful daughter, Kate and the son of an aristocrat, Charles Marlow – hoping the pair will marry. Unfortunately, whilst the privileged Marlow is at ease with ladies of a lower social standing, he becomes flustered with those of his own class. Determined to overcome the obstacles and win his affections by any means necessary, Kate poses as a barmaid in order to succeed.

Alternatively, if you fancy a film, why not go and to see The Girl Who Played with Fire (15) at Broadway?  Race-against-the-clock chase scenes, secret bank accounts and police files, a woman dragged to a barn by a thug who powers up a chain saw, blackmail by sex DVD… welcome back to ‘The Millennium Trilogy’ and the thrilling sequel to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. When two journalists working on a story about the sex-trafficking trade are brutally murdered, Lisbeth Salander becomes the number one suspect. The girl with the dragon tattoo must fight to prove her innocence, reluctantly relying on support from some old friends.

Saturday daytime, go and see Diane Arbus at Nottingham Contemporary. Diane Arbus captured the outsiders of 50s and 60s America in her powerful photographic portraits. Her unmistakable images make us question all our assumptions about “normality”. This exhibition of her most iconic black and white prints, shown alongside rarer works, is a thorough selection of the work of an artist whose influence can be seen in the work of many artists today, including Nan Goldin and Roger Ballen. Artist Rooms on tour with The Art Fund.

Alternatively if you want a day out with the family, go on a Tour of Wollaton Hall. A range of new tours of Wollaton Hall are being introduced. These include a new guided tour of the Gardens and Park, and when the flowers come into bloom, the beautiful Camellia House (subject to weather). So why not try a children's themed tour of the house or one of the nature trails suitable for family groups.

If you know any aspiring musicians, tell them to go to the Free summer music studio at Sherwood Community Centre. If your aged between 13 - 18 and interested in creating music of any type, we are offering free time for individuals and bands to rehearse/record in the sherwood creative arts facility this summer, for info and to book times please e-mail atticstudio@youngpotential.org.uk or call The Sherwood attic on 01159 691 883.

Saturday night is a good chance to see The Country Girl At The Royal Centre. Frank Elgin, once a great theatre star is down on his luck, but when he is offered  a major role by hotshot director Bernie Dodd he has the chance to make a major comeback. Will Frank regain his confidence and save his turbulent career? Will he be supported in his quest for a second chance by his long suffering wife? On Sunday, why not take part in a Sponsored Walk and Scavenger Hunt at Colwick Park? Help raise money for local charity Nottingham Mencap by taking part in a 2.5 or 5 mile walk around the beautiful Colwick Park. Children and adults can also take part in the scavenger hunt and there will be prizes available on the day. To take part you must register for free in advance by calling Dawn Mallender on 0115 956 1130.

Also worth checking out on Sunday is Bands in the Parks at Arboretum. Local bands head to the Arboretum bandstand for the last 'Bands in the Parks' performance of the 2010 season.
