Nottingham's Guide To Weekend Events

10 September 2010

Description:

That Friday feeling is upon us, so here at Guide2Nottingham we like to offer our users a brief overview of what’s on in Nottingham this weekend.  From theatre to films, live music to stoneware, we’ve got it covered and more!

Tonight, if you fancy a film, go and see Certified Copy (12a) at Broadway. Kiarostami’s first film to be made outside Iran was shot in Tuscany and stars Juliette Binoche and acclaimed British baritone William Shimell. The film follows a French gallery owner in a Tuscan town as she spends the day with visiting author James Miller, whose latest book, ‘The Certified Copy,’ about the contrasting power exerted by original works of art versus replicas, has found an audience in Italian translation. Imagine (if you can!) a middle-aged Before Sunrise rolled up with Under the Tuscan Sun but spiked with elements of The Game.

Alternatively, why not go and see Oklahoma! at the Royal Centre? Set on America's Western Frontier, against a background of conflict between farmers and cattlemen, Oklahoma! perfectly integrates song, dance and story to tell the tale of farm girl Laurey and the two rivals for her affections, happy go-lucky cowboy Curly and the sinister farm hand Jud.

Famously, the show opens with 'Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin' and contains a sumptuous and rousing score full of wonderful songs such as 'I Can't Say No', and the final rousing chorus of 'Oklahoma' - as the music soars the audience is carried along on the emotional journey of one of the most famous love stories in musical history.

Also worth checking out tonight, is Basslaced At Stealth. Those hitting the decks tonight include Basslaced Distance, Kryptic Minds and Sukh Knight. Doors open at 22:00 and it’s only £6 to get in.

In the daytime on Saturday, why not go to see Nottingham Brown Salt-Glazed Stoneware 1600-1800 at Nottingham Castle? In the 18th century Nottingham had a thriving pottery industry. The town was famous throughout the country for its lustrous finely made brown pots, often inscribed with people’s names. This new exhibition is based on the Castle’s own collection, along with public and private loans. It looks at the potteries, the potters, what they made and who they made it for. The pots range from mugs and ale jugs to beautifully inscribed loving cups, from teapots and carved mugs to novelties in the form of bears. Related archaeological material found in the City is also on display. This is the first exhibition devoted to Nottingham stoneware for 30 years and shows why Nottingham has an important place in the history of English ceramics.

On Saturday night, why not go and see She Stoops To Conquer At Nottingham Playhouse. Oliver Goldsmith’s 18th century comedy with larger than life characters, big laughs and even bigger frocks! A wealthy country squire arranges a meeting between his beautiful daughter, Kate and the son of an aristocrat, Charles Marlow – hoping the pair will marry. Unfortunately, whilst the privileged Marlow is at ease with ladies of a lower social standing, he becomes flustered with those of his own class. Determined to overcome the obstacles and win his affections by any means necessary, Kate poses as a barmaid in order to succeed. To read our review of the She Stoops To Conquer, click here.

Alternatively, why not go on the Nottingham Ghost Walk. The hugely popular Nottingham Ghost Walk has firmly established itself as one of Nottingham’s favourite tourist attractions. In addition to the regular Ghost Walk every Saturday, there are events for social groups, corporate entertaining, team building, kid’s parties and a wide range of other groups. The Ghost Walk visits fantastic haunted caves beneath the Salutation Inn as part of the Tour.
